Why Aeration Matters

Many ponds and lakes suffer from poor oxygen levels caused by stagnant water, decomposing organic matter, and nutrient-rich runoff from surrounding properties. Left unmanaged, these conditions can quickly turn a beautiful water feature into a foul-smelling, algae-choked, weed-filled mess that’s both unattractive and unhealthy for aquatic life. It doesn’t take long for what was once a visual asset to become an ecological problem.

Aeration helps fix that.

At New England Aquatic Landscaping, we provide professional pond and lake aeration solutions designed to restore balance and clarity to your waterbody. Whether you’re in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, or southern New Hampshire, we bring over 14 years of experience to every project. From private backyard ponds to larger residential or commercial lakes, our team understands the unique challenges of water management in Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Worcester, Plymouth, and Essex counties and beyond.

If your pond is showing signs of stress — murky water, algae blooms, foul odors, or struggling fish — we can help you get it back on track. Aeration is one of the most effective and natural solutions available.

How Aeration Works

Aeration is all about gas exchange. By mixing the water column, aeration systems release harmful gases (like methane and hydrogen sulfide) and replace them with oxygen. More oxygen means:

  • Healthier fish populations

  • Less muck and sludge

  • Reduced odors

  • Cleaner, clearer water

  • Fewer weeds and algae

Surface vs. Bottom Aeration: How They Work and When to Use Them

Both surface and bottom aeration systems play a vital role in improving pond health by increasing dissolved oxygen levels, boosting circulation, reducing algae and weed growth, eliminating foul odors, and supporting a stronger, more vibrant fish population. While they offer similar benefits, they function differently and are suited for different conditions. Surface aeration, typically achieved through floating fountains, offers a visually striking display—especially when paired with lighting for nighttime ambiance. These systems help control surface growth like duckweed and watermeal and create gentle, soothing water movement. However, surface aerators only circulate water within the top 6 to 8 feet and generally need to be removed during the winter in colder climates. On the other hand, bottom aeration systems (also known as diffused air systems) use air-driven bubblers to push oxygen to the pond’s lowest levels. They’re ideal for deeper ponds over four feet, offer a lower-maintenance, year-round solution, and preserve the pond’s natural look. Bottom aeration is especially effective at breaking down organic muck and reducing sludge, providing full-body circulation from top to bottom.

Top notch every step of the way from follow up initial phone calls before work began to fast, professional, friendly service in the field.

I had a relatively small job that needed diagnosis and repair. The job was approached with the same care and consideration as if I was spending ten times the amount.

Contractors from different disciplines could learn a lot from how NE Aquatic Landscaping approaches customer service.

I bought this house with a Koi pond. Did no know anything about it or how to care for the fish properly.

I called them to come out and clean it for me and they not only cleaned it, they answered my questions and provided information for me as far as the future repairs that could come up in the future.

The pond was just done again 4/2019 and it looks great. They made an onsite repair to the check valve and the falls are ready to flow…….

Very happy with the staff, very friendly, efficient and if you ask a question that they do not know the answer to, they will find the answer and get back to you before they leave. Would definitely recommend.

Shawn and I just completed a revamp of a pondless waterfall at a public library.

Shawn graciously donated his time to improve this public retreat. His great work ethic and artistic eye, along with his passion for the water garden industry make it an easy recommendation for me to make.

I wouldn’t hesitate to hire Shawn for your waterfeature or hardscape project, in fact, I may just bring him in to help with my next big job.
