Creating the Best Indoor Pond at The Butterfly Place: A Stunning Transformation

When it comes to building breathtaking water features, every project brings its own unique challenges and inspirations. Our latest pond renovation at The Butterfly Place in Westford, MA was no exception. This indoor tropical paradise provided the perfect backdrop for a one-of-a-kind pond design that would seamlessly blend with the lush surroundings and vibrant butterfly-filled environment.

About The Butterfly Place

Located in Westford, Massachusetts, The Butterfly Place is a one-of-a-kind indoor garden where visitors can walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies. The facility is home to native and tropical butterfly species, offering an educational experience for guests of all ages. With lush greenery and a serene atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature and learn about these fascinating creatures.

Reimagining an Outdated Pond System

The original pond at The Butterfly Place had a flawed irrigation system that made water level maintenance difficult. Water flowed directly into the pond without a control mechanism, requiring constant monitoring to prevent overflow. Instead of scrapping the existing infrastructure, we found a smart solution—utilizing the old irrigation pipe to install a new automatic fill system. With a built-in float valve, the pond will now maintain the perfect water level without manual adjustments, making upkeep easier for the staff.

Designing a Natural Jungle-Inspired Pond

At New England Aquatic Landscaping, we always strive to create natural, immersive environments. The Butterfly Place’s indoor habitat is already a lush, tropical escape, and we wanted the new pond to complement that jungle aesthetic. Our team took inspiration from real-world rainforests, crafting a pond that feels as if it belongs in the wild.

  • Layered Rock Work: Instead of relying solely on large frame rocks, we carefully placed smaller hand-selected stones to build a more organic and intricate look. This hands-on approach allowed us to shape a pond edge that enhances the overall visual experience for visitors standing nearby.
  • Interactive Design: We added a two-layered bay that brings visitors even closer to the water’s edge, making them feel more connected to the pond. This interactive element helps immerse guests in the peaceful ambiance of the space.
  • Strategic Waterfall Placement: The pond’s natural flow is leading toward an eye-catching waterfall, positioned in front of the atrium’s large dirt mound. This feature will serve as a central focal point for visitors entering and leaving the exhibit.

Making Room for a New Tropical Ecosystem

As part of the transformation, The Butterfly Place staff requested the removal of a tree that no longer fit their vision for the exhibit. Since we were already working in that area, we took on the responsibility of safely removing it, giving them room to introduce new, butterfly-friendly plant species better suited for the tropical theme.

A Natural Look With a Bittersweet Reality

While designing a pond for a natural indoor environment, we had a realization—this beautiful new pond won’t have frogs. Since the habitat is enclosed, amphibians won’t be hopping in naturally. However, the new ecosystem will still thrive with fish, aquatic plants, and flowing water that adds life to the environment.

Final Touches & Next Steps

With the rock work nearly complete, we are now moving toward the final stages of the pond build. The stream is taking shape, and we’ve incorporated unique natural elements—such as a hand-selected driftwood piece brought from home—to enhance the organic aesthetic.

Once finished, this pond will become a stunning focal point within The Butterfly Place, offering visitors a peaceful, immersive experience alongside the butterflies.
