This project began as a simple request: refresh an existing pond and reorient the waterfall for improved viewing. What it became was something far more transformative—a complete rebuild that would serve as the finishing touch on an outdoor living space years in the making.

When we first met on site, the homeowners had already completed rough construction of a stunning 20' x 30' pavilion overlooking their existing pond, with final outdoor living details still underway. The vision was clear: this pavilion would be the heart of their backyard, a place for gathering, relaxing, and enjoying everything they'd built.

But there was a problem. The existing 12' x 10' pond, originally 2 feet deep, had aged significantly. Rockwork was beginning to collapse. And most importantly—it no longer fit the scale of the space or the experience they wanted to create.

What They Started With

  • A 12' x 10' pond, only 2 feet deep
  • Rockwork beginning to collapse from age
  • Waterfall oriented away from the new pavilion view
  • A feature that no longer matched the scale of the upgraded outdoor space

Why They Chose New England Aquatic Landscaping

Early in the process, the homeowners shared that they had explored several options and spoken with other contractors. What ultimately set us apart was our ability to listen beyond the initial request and help them see what the space could become. Through thoughtful conversation, site evaluation, and reviewing past projects together, they felt confident we understood not just the mechanics of the build, but the experience they wanted to create from the pavilion and throughout their backyard.

Having decided they were staying in the home long-term, the homeowners viewed this investment as the finishing touch—the element that would bring their outdoor living space together and elevate how they would use and enjoy it for years to come.

From Modest Update to Complete Transformation

What started as a modest update evolved into a complete pond rebuild. The pond was expanded to 16' x 20' and deepened to a final depth of 2.5 feet, creating a true focal point designed to be viewed and enjoyed directly from the pavilion.

12-Foot Natural Waterfall

A 12-Foot Waterfall, Plus a Mystery

A 12-foot-long, natural-looking waterfall was carefully designed and constructed to provide visual movement and soothing sound—perfectly positioned for the pavilion view.

But there's more: an additional mystery waterfall reveals itself organically within the landscape, a surprise element that delights as you explore the space.

Natural Boulder Retaining Wall

Natural Boulder Retaining Wall

To support the expansion and waterfall construction, a natural boulder retaining wall was built along the backside of the pond. In total, 34 tons of natural rock and boulders were used to create stable structure, natural transitions, and a timeless aesthetic.

The result is a feature that looks like it's been there forever—solid, natural, and seamlessly integrated into the landscape.

The Finishing Touch

This project represents exactly what happens when a homeowner is ready to make a significant investment in their outdoor living space—and partners with a team that understands not just the technical requirements, but the experience they're trying to create.

From the pavilion, the view is exactly what they envisioned: water in motion, the gentle sound of falls, and a feature that transforms the entire backyard into a destination rather than just a yard.
