What Makes a Water Feature Cost More or Less?

The base package is a complete, running ecosystem pond: design consultation, excavation, liner, filtration system, pump, rock and gravel, basic aquatic plantings, and professional installation labor. The number moves from there based on six things.

    Size

Surface area drives excavation, liner, stone, and labor. Our ecosystem pond packages step up from 6 by 8 feet at $15,000 to 20 by 15 feet at $110,000 and up.

    Waterfalls and streams

A small waterfall is included. A medium waterfall adds $1,500, a grand multi-drop waterfall adds $13,500. Streams run from $2,650 for 5 feet to $18,000 for 20 feet.

    Lighting

Lighting packages run from $1,080 for a simple pondless setup to $7,700 for the deluxe pond package.

    Equipment and technology

Add-ons like a copper ionizer ($1,000), automatic fill valve ($500 and up), dosing system ($240 to $420 and up), or custom spillway filter bowl ($4,500 and up) each add to the base.

    Site conditions and access

Ledge, tight side yards, steep grades, and limited machine access all add labor time. Our Uxbridge rebuild came in under $37,000 partly because every stone had to be carried in by hand.

    Travel

Travel time and distance to and from a project can affect the total. We confirm this during your intro call.

How Can You Spend Less on a Water Feature?

The honest answer is to buy the right feature, not the biggest one. These are the choices that lower the number, and what you give up with each.

    • Choose a pondless waterfall (from $7,500) or fountainscape (from $6,500) instead of an ecosystem pond (from $15,000). You get the sound and movement of water without open water, which also means no fish or aquatic plants and far less maintenance.
    • Keep the included small waterfall (2 to 6 inch drop) rather than upgrading. A grand waterfall adds $13,500.
    • Go with a short 5 foot stream at $2,650 rather than a 20 foot stream at $18,000.
    • Start with domestic koi at $20 each rather than Japanese koi at $125 each.
    • Pick the standard lighting package at $3,500 over deluxe at $7,700.

If you are deciding between two scopes, the Discovery Meeting is designed to settle exactly that question on your property.

What Does a Pond Cost After It Is Built?

A pond is a living system, so it has an annual cost. Here is what ongoing care runs with us so you can plan the whole picture, not just the build.

Annual spring cleanout: $1,300 to $5,000 and up

$1,300 for ponds up to 90 sq ft, $2,500 up to 180 sq ft, $5,000 and up for larger ponds. Ponds deeper than 2.5 feet cost more.

Maintenance memberships: $2,264 to $6,544 per year

Standard, Premium, and VIP Stress Free plans, prepaid annually, priced by pond size. Pondless and fountainscape plans start at $1,395.

Water treatments: $47 to $79 per dose

If you add an automatic dosing system, treatments are sold separately.

Pondless waterfalls and fountainscapes are lower maintenance and typically need an annual basin cleaning plus seasonal startup and shutdown. Electricity for the pump depends on pump size and run time; we size this during your Discovery Meeting.

    Pricing FAQ

This calculator provides realistic ballpark ranges based on our 18 years of building water features across New England. Final pricing is always based on an on-site Discovery Meeting where we assess your specific site conditions, design preferences, and any unique challenges. Think of these as starting points, not final quotes.

Base pricing includes design consultation, excavation, liner, filtration system, pump, rocks and gravel, basic aquatic plantings, and professional installation labor. Add-ons like lighting, ionizers, and extended streams are additional. Site conditions, travel, and any add-ons are the main things that change the number. Visit our pond construction page for full details on what goes into every build.

Want to build bigger than your current budget allows?

We offer financing options that allow many homeowners to build closer to what they truly want, without waiting. Ask about financing during your consultation.

    The Conversation

Financing isn't complicated to discuss. During your phone consultation or site visit, just bring it up. We'll walk you through what's available and whether it makes sense for your project.

    Why It Matters

The single most consistent thing we hear from pond owners a year or two after build: 'I wish I'd gone bigger.' Financing often makes the difference between building what you can afford right now and building what you'll actually love for the next twenty years.

    What to Know

Financing availability and terms vary. The conversation is always worth having, especially if you're on the fence between two different scopes of project.

Ask about financing options during your consultation. Building what you'll love for the next twenty years is usually more achievable than you think.
