Natural Swimming Ponds
Natural Swimming Pools and Swim Ponds: Swim in Water the Way Nature Made It
A natural swimming pool is cleaned by plants, gravel and circulation instead of chlorine or salt. It looks like a natural pond and swims like a pool. We design and build them for homeowners across Massachusetts and New England.
Natural swimming pool builders near you, across New England
Natural swimming ponds need space and sun, and we see the most interest from larger lots in MetroWest, Greater Boston and the North Shore. Local pages cover natural swimming ponds in Framingham, natural pools in Lexington and swim ponds in Ipswich. Every project starts with a free phone call and a Discovery Meeting where Shawn checks sun, grade and space.
These are our largest builds, so projects in Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire are scheduled in blocks and staged from start to finish. That includes Hartford County and the Connecticut River valley, Narragansett Bay and southern New Hampshire. See natural swimming pools in West Hartford, swim ponds in Barrington and natural pools in Bedford, or view the full service area.
A natural swimming pond combines the beauty of a living water garden with the function of a swimming environment, without chlorine, without chemicals, without the sanitized feel of a conventional pool. Instead, the system relies on biological filtration: plants, beneficial bacteria, and thoughtful circulation maintaining water clarity the same way nature maintains a healthy lake or river.
The result blends seamlessly into your landscape, supports aquatic plants and wildlife, and gives you a place to swim in water that feels genuinely alive. Unlike a pool, which has one season and one use, a natural swimming pond is a compelling landscape feature twelve months of the year.
How It Works, Wetland Filtration
A natural swimming pond is divided into two zones: the swimming area and the regeneration zone. The regeneration zone is a dedicated plant filtration area, typically a planted gravel bed or wetland-style filter, where aquatic plants and beneficial bacteria process nutrients continuously, removing the excess that would otherwise fuel algae and cause water quality problems.
Water circulates from the swimming zone into the regeneration zone and back. The plants and bacterial colonies in the regeneration zone are the biological engine of the system. No chemicals replace what they do. The result, in a well-designed and properly maintained system, is clear, balanced, clean water, without chlorine, without chloramines, without salt systems, and without the monthly chemical cost.
Is the Water Actually Safe to Swim In?
Yes, when properly designed and maintained. The biological filtration in a well-built natural swimming pond produces water that is clear, balanced, and safe for swimming without chemical additives. That said, these systems require attentive seasonal care.
Like any living system, they reward thoughtful ownership. Managed well, the water is genuinely remarkable.
What the Water Will and Won't Look Like
This is worth saying plainly before you invest in one: a natural swimming pond will not look like a tiled pool filled with chemically treated water. The water will be clean, healthy, and genuinely clear, clear enough to see the bottom, clear enough to swim in comfortably. But there will be a natural tint, often a soft green or earthy tone, because you're looking into a living system.
The rocks and gravel will carry a healthy biofilm coating. That's not a problem. It's the beneficial biology keeping the water balanced and safe. Wildlife will find the water, frogs, dragonflies, aquatic insects, and that's part of what makes these systems function. If you can embrace swimming in something that feels genuinely alive and connected to the natural world, a natural swimming pond can be one of the most extraordinary things on a property. If you're measuring it against a conventional pool's appearance, it's important to know that's a different standard.
How It Compares to a Conventional Swimming Pool
A conventional pool relies on constant chemical treatment to stay swimmable. A natural swimming pond maintains itself through biological balance. There's no chemical smell, no red eyes, no monthly chemical cost. The experience is fundamentally different. And unlike a pool, which is largely inert outside of swim season, a natural swimming pond is a genuine landscape feature twelve months a year, beautiful in winter, alive in spring, at its peak through summer and fall.

What It Takes to Build One
Natural swimming ponds require significant space, careful design, and a meaningful investment. The regeneration zone needs to be properly sized for the water volume and use level, this is the biological engine and it can't be undersized. Depth, circulation, and planting ratios all need to be thoughtfully balanced. These are our most complex builds, and they benefit enormously from experienced design and installation. The consultation is where we'll talk through whether your property and goals are the right fit, and give you an honest answer about what your site can support.
Natural Swimming Pond Investment, Massachusetts Pricing
Natural swimming ponds are our most significant investment. We build them in three sizes.
Children's (Small) Recreational Pond, 18 by 25 feet, 3 feet deep, 3 foot stream: starting at $120,000.
Average Swimming Pond, 25 by 30 feet, 4 feet deep, 5 foot stream: starting at $165,000.
Large Swimming Pond, 30 by 40 feet, 5 feet deep, 5 foot stream: starting at $275,000.
Prices are averages and may change based on size, excavation complexity, soil conditions, wetland planting scope, and finish level. You'll receive an exact quote for your unique project after the in-home visit.

As Master Certified Aquascape Contractors and 2026 Regional CAC of the Year, we build to a documented standard, not a subjective one.
We understand the biology
Natural swimming ponds succeed or fail based on biological balance. We've spent 18 years understanding how water, rock, plant, and bacteria interact, and building systems that work.
We know New England
Massachusetts soil conditions, freeze-thaw cycles, permit requirements, and seasonal swimming windows are things we've navigated on every project we've built here.

We Built a Pond You Can Swim In, Here's How It Turned Out
Natural swimming pools, swim ponds, natural pools: same idea, different names
People search for natural swimming pools, natural pools, swimming ponds and swim ponds. They usually mean the same thing: a body of water you swim in that stays clean without chlorine or salt. We call ours natural swimming ponds, and they work the same way under any of those names.
Every one has two parts. The swim zone is open water you can dive into. The regeneration zone is a planted gravel wetland filter set apart from the swim area. Water circulates from the swim zone through the regeneration zone, where plants and beneficial bacteria take up the nutrients that would feed algae, then flows back. Skimming and circulation keep the surface clear.
What changes from one to the next is size and depth. A smaller recreational pond around 18 by 25 feet and 3 feet deep runs roughly $120,000 to $165,000. An average swimming pond around 25 by 30 feet and 4 feet deep runs roughly $165,000 to $275,000. A large 30 by 40 foot, 5 foot deep pond runs upwards of $275,000.
Who builds natural swimming pools in New England
Natural swimming pool builders are hard to find in New England, because the work sits between pool construction and pond building. A pool contractor knows excavation and structure but not wetland filtration. Many landscapers have never sized a regeneration zone. The biology is what keeps the water clean, so the builder needs to understand it.
NEAL has built water features in New England since 2008. Shawn Cutroni is a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor, and we were named Aquascape's 2026 Regional CAC of the Year. The same filtration principles that keep our ecosystem ponds clear, skimming, circulation, plants and beneficial bacteria, run a natural swimming pond at a larger scale.
When you talk to any natural pool company, ask how they size the regeneration zone, how the swim zone is separated from the plants, and what the pond needs each season. Ask about permits too. Requirements vary by town, and we walk you through what yours asks for. Financing through Hearth runs 2 to 12 years. Read how natural swimming ponds work in New England.
