Search for natural swimming pool builders near you and you will notice the list is short. The work sits between pool construction and pond building, and very few companies do both well. Here is how to vet anyone you are considering for a swim pond in New England, including us.
Why This Is a Specialty Build
A pool contractor knows excavation and structure but usually not wetland filtration. Many landscapers have never sized a regeneration zone. In a natural swimming pond, the biology is what keeps the water clean, so the builder has to understand how water, rock, plants and bacteria interact, not just how to dig a hole and set stone.
The same principles that keep a well-built ecosystem pond clear, skimming, circulation, plants and beneficial bacteria, run a natural swimming pond at a larger scale. A builder who does not understand them at the small scale will not get them right at the large one. Questions to Ask Any Builder
1. How do you size the regeneration zone?
This is the most important question. The regeneration zone is the biological engine of the pond, and it has to be sized for the water volume and how heavily the pond will be used. A good builder will explain how they arrive at the size for your pond, in plain language. Be cautious with anyone who treats it as a decorative planting bed.
2. How is the swim zone separated from the plants?
The swim zone should be open water, kept free of plants so you have room to move. The wetland sits apart from it, with water circulating between the two. Ask to see how that separation works on a drawing or a finished pond.
3. What will the water actually look like?
The honest answer is clean and clear enough to see the bottom, with a natural tint and a healthy biofilm on the rocks. Anyone who promises pool-clear water with no visible biology is either describing something else or setting you up to be disappointed.
4. What does the pond need each season?
Listen for specifics: a spring startup, fall leaf control, trimming plants, flushing the wetland snorkel once a year, and a professional deep clean every few years. A builder who says a swim pond needs nothing is not telling you the whole story.
5. How do you handle fish?
Swim ponds are designed for people, with a light fish load or none at all. Some designs do not accommodate fish. A builder should be able to explain how fish change the biological load and what happens if the population grows. Our article on restoring an old swim pond shows what an overcrowded pond looks like.
6. What does my town require?
Permit requirements differ from town to town. Your builder should walk you through what yours asks for before any ground is broken.
7. Can I see swim ponds you have built or maintained?
Ask for photos, videos or a chance to see their work. We document our builds and service calls on our YouTube channel, including a tour of a 33,000-gallon recreation pond and a full swim pond cleanout; you can find them in our video library.
8. How long will construction take, and who will be on site?
Most natural swimming ponds take 3 to 4 weeks to build. Ask whether the crew stays on your project until it is finished or splits time across jobs. Once we start, we work every day until your feature is running.
9. What happens after the build?
Get the warranty in writing and read the exclusions. Ask whether the builder offers ongoing care. Our standard coverage is one year parts and labor on everything we supply and install, with longer coverage on pumps, lights and other components; the full terms are on our warranty page.
Credentials That Mean Something
Certification will not build a pond for you, but it does tell you a builder works to a documented standard rather than a subjective one. Shawn Cutroni is a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor, the highest level of Aquascape certification, and NEAL was named Aquascape's 2026 Regional CAC of the Year. We have been building water features in New England since 2008.
Red Flags
- The builder cannot explain the regeneration zone in plain terms.
- The pitch is a pool with rocks around it.
- You are promised pool-clear water and no maintenance.
- There is no written warranty, or the exclusions are vague.
- Nobody wants to visit the site before giving you a price.
How We Approach a Swim Pond Project
Every project starts with a free phone call about how you want to use the water. If a swim pond looks like a fit, Shawn comes to your property for a Discovery Meeting to check sun, grade, soil and space, then designs the pond around what he finds. We walk you through permits, schedule out-of-state builds in blocks, and stay involved through planting while the wetland matures. For a sense of budget, see what a natural swimming pond costs, and before the visit, check whether your yard is right for one.
We work from Cherry Valley, Massachusetts, across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and southern New Hampshire. Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire builds are scheduled in blocks so excavation, liner, stone and planting days are staged together. See our natural swimming pond pages for Connecticut, Burlington, North Kingstown and Nashua, or the full service area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there natural swimming pool builders near me?
We design and build natural swimming pools across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and southern New Hampshire from our base in Worcester County. Because these are large projects, out-of-state builds are scheduled in blocks and staged together. Start with a free phone consultation at (774) 437-1160.
What certifications should a natural pool builder have?
Look for a builder who can show training and a track record in biological filtration, not just excavation. Aquascape certification is one industry standard; Master Certified Aquascape Contractor is its highest level. NEAL holds that certification and was named Aquascape's 2026 Regional CAC of the Year.
How long does it take to build a natural swimming pond?
Most natural swimming ponds take 3 to 4 weeks to build. After that, the biology typically needs 4 to 8 weeks to establish and reach a stable balance, and the wetland plants keep maturing over the next year or two.
What should I ask a natural pool company before hiring them?
Ask how they size the regeneration zone, how the swim zone is separated from the plants, what the water will look like, what the pond needs each season, how they handle fish, what your town requires for permits, what the warranty covers, and whether you can see swim ponds they have built or maintained.
