How we build an ecosystem pond
Our ponds follow the Aquascape method. A skimmer pulls debris off the surface and houses the pump. Water travels to a biological waterfall filter, where bacteria break down waste, then spills back over stone into the pond. Underlayment and a 45 mil EPDM liner sit beneath rock and gravel, and plant shelves give lilies and marginals a home.
It all recirculates, so you are not running a hose into it. Fish, plants, and bacteria balance each other, which keeps upkeep low. An auto-fill valve is optional if you would rather not top off by hand.
Granite, frost, and outwash soils
New Hampshire is granite country, and ledge often turns up close to the surface in towns like Bedford, Amherst, and Windham. We plan excavation around it rather than fighting it, and sometimes a rock outcrop becomes the anchor for a waterfall.
Along the Merrimack River in Nashua, Hudson, and Merrimack, you are more likely to find sandy glacial outwash that digs easily but needs careful shaping. Deeper frost and longer winters make our 2 foot standard depth important. Portsmouth on the Seacoast adds salt air to the list. We build seven package sizes. Serenity Oasis is 6 by 8 feet and 2 feet deep, at $15,000 to $20,000. Garden Jewel, our most popular, is 8 by 10 feet at $25,000 to $29,000. Backyard Haven at 10 by 15 feet runs $31,000 to $42,000, the Fire & Water Escape (12x12, 2 feet deep) starting at $56,500, the Estate Essentials 15x20 starting at $60,000, the Estate Essentials 20x25 starting at $84,000, and Luxury Retreat at 20 by 15 feet runs $110,000 to $142,000.
Add-ons change the total: waterfalls roughly $1,500 to $13,500 by drop, streams roughly $2,650 to $18,000 by length, and lighting roughly $3,500 to $7,700. Ledge removal and tight access raise costs too.
Steps to a finished pond
Start with a free phone consultation. Then Shawn Cutroni visits for a Discovery Meeting, studies your slope, sun, soil, and views from the house, and designs the pond around them. Final pricing comes after that visit, and Hearth financing offers 2 to 12 year terms.

What if you hit ledge while digging?
It happens often in New Hampshire, and we plan for it. During the Discovery Meeting we look for signs of shallow rock and talk through options. Sometimes we adjust the pond shape, sometimes we build up rather than down, and sometimes the ledge becomes part of the design. Major rock removal does affect cost.
Do you build ponds in Portsmouth and the Seacoast?
We do. Seacoast properties bring salt air and wind into the planning, so we pay attention to plant choice, equipment housing, and where debris will blow. Portsmouth projects are scheduled with our other New Hampshire work, so the crew can stage the build and the follow-up visit in the same trip.
