Ecosystem Pond Design and Construction in Plymouth, Massachusetts
New England Aquatic Landscaping builds recirculating ecosystem ponds and koi ponds for Plymouth homeowners, complete with plants, fish, and the sound of moving water. On the South Shore, sandy soil digs easily, but a high water table in some yards changes how deep we excavate and how we protect the liner.

How an Ecosystem Pond Works
An ecosystem pond copies what a healthy natural pond does. A skimmer at one end pulls floating debris and houses the pump. Water travels to a biological waterfall filter at the other end, where bacteria break down waste before the water spills back in. Rock and gravel over the liner give bacteria more surface to live on.
Plants on built in shelves take up nutrients, and fish complete the cycle. No hose runs in all summer. We build to 2 ft deep as a standard so fish overwinter under the ice, on underlayment and a 45 mil EPDM liner.
Building in Plymouth Soil and Coastal Weather
Sandy soils near the coast make excavation fast, but sand can slough off steep walls, so we shape shelves carefully and compact as we go. Where the water table sits high, groundwater can lift a liner from below, and we plan depth and drainage to avoid that.
Salt air and wind influence plant selection on exposed lots, and pine needles from surrounding trees point us toward a larger skimmer. Fall is a strong time to build here: the ground is workable and plants settle in before spring.
Package Sizes and Budgets
Our Serenity Oasis, 6 by 8 ft and 2 ft deep, runs $15,000 to $20,000. The Garden Jewel at 8 by 10 ft, our most popular, runs $25,000 to $29,000. A Backyard Haven at 10 by 15 ft runs $31,000 to $42,000, and a Luxury Retreat at 20 by 15 ft runs $110,000 to $142,000.
Add-ons move the total: waterfalls roughly $1,500 to $13,500 depending on drop, streams roughly $2,650 to $18,000 by length, and lighting packages roughly $3,500 to $7,700. Expect roughly $25 to $75 per month in electricity during the season.
From Discovery Meeting to First Fish
Call for a free phone consultation. Shawn then visits your Plymouth property, studies sun, slope, and drainage, and designs the pond around the yard instead of forcing a kit into it. Final pricing follows that visit, and financing through Hearth is available with 2 to 12 year terms.
Construction moves from layout and excavation to underlayment, liner, plumbing, rock and gravel, then plants and water. We start the system, check the flow, and add fish once the pond is ready for them.
Why Plymouth homeowners call us
Plymouth homeowners call us because a pond on the South Shore has to handle sand, salt air, and pine needles without turning into a maintenance chore. We have built more than 200 water features across New England over 18 years, and as a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor we build the full ecosystem rather than a liner and a pump.
Full details, photos, and pricing tiers are on the Ecosystem Ponds service page, and our pricing calculator gives a ballpark before we visit.

Frequently asked questions
Will a high water table affect a pond in Plymouth?
It can. Groundwater pressing up under a liner can cause bulges or float the liner in wet seasons. During the Discovery Meeting we look at the lot's elevation, drainage, and soil, and we adjust depth, grading, and underlayment so the pond stays stable through spring thaw and heavy rain.
Can fish live in the pond year round?
Yes. At 2 ft deep with proper circulation, fish settle near the bottom and ride out winter under the ice. We keep an opening in the ice for gas exchange. In spring, wait until the water reaches a consistent 55°F before you start feeding them again.
How much does it cost to run an ecosystem pond?
Electricity typically runs roughly $25 to $75 per month during the season, depending on pump size and how many waterfalls you have. Beyond that, expect a yearly spring cleanout and occasional plant care. Because the system filters itself biologically, you are not buying chemicals or running a hose into it.
Is fall a good time to build a pond?
Fall is one of our favorite build seasons. The ground is still workable, the weather is comfortable for the crew, and plants have time to settle before they wake up in spring. Your pond is established and ready to enjoy as soon as the weather turns warm.
