Ecosystem Pond Builders in Salem, New Hampshire
New England Aquatic Landscaping builds ecosystem ponds in Salem, New Hampshire, with skimmers, biological waterfall filters, rock, gravel, plants, and fish working together. The result is a pond that cleans itself and holds fish through winter. In Salem, granite ledge and deep frost are the main factors, so we plan excavation and depth around what the ground and the cold will allow.

Parts of a Self-Cleaning Pond
The skimmer sits at the low end, collecting leaves and floating debris and protecting the pump. Water travels to a biological falls filter, where bacteria break down waste before the water returns over a waterfall. Underneath everything are underlayment and a 45 mil EPDM liner, covered with rock and gravel.
Plant shelves hold aquatics that soak up nutrients algae would otherwise use. Fish eat mosquito larvae and add life to the water. Auto-fill is optional to cover evaporation in summer heat.
Building on Salem Ground
Salem is in Rockingham County, where granite ledge often sits close to the surface. When our excavator meets ledge, we usually shift the pond footprint or build it into the design as a natural rock face. Winters here are long and the frost runs deep, so we build every pond 2 feet deep with good circulation for overwintering fish.
The crew travels from Cherry Valley, Massachusetts, and schedules New Hampshire builds in blocks, keeping each phase of construction on consecutive days.
What a Salem Pond Costs
Our Serenity Oasis, 6 by 8 feet and 2 feet deep, runs $15,000 to $20,000. The Garden Jewel at 8 by 10 feet runs $25,000 to $29,000. The Backyard Haven at 10 by 15 feet runs $31,000 to $42,000, and the Luxury Retreat at 20 by 15 feet runs $110,000 to $142,000.
Expect roughly $25 to $75 per month in seasonal electricity. Ledge work, waterfall and stream add-ons, lighting, and site access shape the final price. Hearth financing is available with 2 to 12 year terms.
Our Build Process
It begins with a free phone consultation. After that, Shawn Cutroni visits your Salem property for a Discovery Meeting, where he looks at the grade, sun exposure, trees, and signs of ledge, then designs the pond to suit the site. Final pricing follows that meeting.
When the design is approved, we place the project in our next New Hampshire block. The crew digs, sets the liner and equipment, builds the stonework, plants, and fills, then walks you through care before leaving the site.

Frequently asked questions
Will my fish survive a Salem, NH winter in the pond?
Yes, when the pond is built right. We dig to 2 feet and keep water circulating so a section stays open for gas exchange. Fish rest near the bottom where the water stays above freezing. Shallow, poorly circulated ponds are the ones that lose fish.
Does ledge make a pond impossible to build?
No. Ledge is common in southern New Hampshire, and we work with it regularly. Often the pond shape shifts to avoid the worst of it, or the rock becomes part of the waterfall. Removing ledge is possible but adds cost, which is why we look before pricing.
How long does it take to build an ecosystem pond?
Smaller ponds usually take a few days of on-site work once the crew arrives. Larger ponds with streams and multiple waterfalls take longer. Because New Hampshire projects are scheduled in blocks, we plan the full build to run without long gaps between phases.
Do I need to run a hose to keep the pond full?
No. An ecosystem pond recirculates its own water. You will see some evaporation in hot weather, which an optional auto-fill valve tops off automatically. Most owners add one so they never have to think about water level during a hot, dry summer.
