Pond Builders in Newport, Rhode Island
New England Aquatic Landscaping builds self-filtering ecosystem ponds in Newport for homeowners who want moving water, fish, and plants without a chemical routine. On Newport yards, salt air and steady wind off Narragansett Bay decide plant choices, skimmer placement, and how the stonework is set, so those come first in every design.

How Our Ponds Work
An ecosystem pond keeps itself balanced. A skimmer collects floating leaves and debris and holds the pump. That pump sends water to a biological waterfall filter, where beneficial bacteria clean it before it spills back over the stone.
We lay underlayment and a 45 mil EPDM liner, then cover it with rock and gravel so bacteria have surface to colonize. Plant shelves hold marginal and floating plants that compete with algae for nutrients, and fish round out the system. Ponds are built 2 feet deep as standard, and an optional auto-fill keeps the level steady through summer.
Building Near the Water in Newport County
Newport winters are milder than central Massachusetts, but hard freezes still come, and a pond has to handle ice without cracking plumbing or heaving stone. Sandy and loamy soils make digging straightforward, though sand needs compacting so edges stay level for years.
Wind and salt are the bigger factors. Breezes off the water push debris to one side, so we set the skimmer where the wind delivers it. We favor plants that tolerate salt spray and place the pond where a wall or planting softens the gusts. The crew travels from Cherry Valley and schedules Rhode Island builds in blocks.
What Newport Ponds Cost
Serenity Oasis, 6 by 8 feet, runs $15,000 to $20,000. Garden Jewel, 8 by 10 feet and our most requested, runs $25,000 to $29,000. A 10 by 15 foot Backyard Haven falls between $31,000 and $42,000, and the 20 by 15 foot Luxury Retreat between $110,000 and $142,000.
Taller waterfalls add roughly $1,500 to $13,500, streams roughly $2,650 to $18,000 by length, and lighting roughly $3,500 to $7,700. Tight access on older lots can add labor. Expect roughly $25 to $75 per month in seasonal electricity.
The Steps to Your Pond
A free phone consultation comes first, so we understand what you want: fish, sound, a view from the patio. Then Shawn Cutroni walks your Newport property during a Discovery Meeting, studying sun, wind, soil, and access, and designs the pond for that spot.
You get final pricing after the visit, with Hearth financing available on 2 to 12 year terms. Your build is scheduled into our next Rhode Island block. Fall builds work well, since the soil is workable and plants settle before spring. On handover day we explain the skimmer, the falls, and the auto-fill, and talk through what the pond needs in its first season.
Why Newport homeowners call us
Newport homeowners call us when they want a water feature that holds up to coastal weather instead of one that looks good for a season. NEAL was named Aquascape's 2026 Regional CAC of the Year, and Shawn Cutroni designs each Newport pond around the specific wind, light, and space of the yard.
Full details, photos, and pricing tiers are on the Ecosystem Ponds service page, and our pricing calculator gives a ballpark before we visit.

Frequently asked questions
Which plants hold up in a Newport pond with salt air?
Hardy marginal plants such as rushes, iris, and sedges generally handle coastal exposure well, and water lilies do fine on the surface once the pond is sheltered from the worst wind. We match plant choices to your yard during the Discovery Meeting.
How deep should a pond be in Rhode Island?
We build to 2 feet as standard. With good circulation, that depth lets fish rest below the ice through winter. Deeper sections are possible for koi, but most homeowners find 2 feet gives the right balance of fish safety and easy care.
How long does it take to build a pond in Newport?
Most backyard ecosystem ponds take a few days to about a week once the crew is on site, depending on size, waterfalls, and access. Larger Luxury Retreat builds take longer. Because Rhode Island work is scheduled in blocks, the start date depends on our next regional window.
Does an ecosystem pond attract mosquitoes?
Not when it is built correctly. Moving water from the waterfall and skimmer keeps the surface active, and fish eat larvae. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, which a recirculating pond does not have. Fish and frogs also help keep the insect population in balance around the water.
